• Description : Research and theorizing on criminal decision making has not kept pace with recent developments in other fields of human decision making. Whereas criminal decision making theory is still largely dominated by cognitive approaches such as rational choice-based models, psychologists, behavioral economists and neuroscientists have found affect (i.e., emotions, moods) and visceral factors such as sexual arousal and drug craving, to play a fundamental role in human decision processes. This book examines alternative approaches to incorporating affect into criminal decision making and testing its influence on such decisions. In so doing it generalizes extant cognitive theories of criminal decision making by incorporating affect into the decision process. In two conceptual and ten empirical chapters it is carefully argued how affect influences criminal decisions alongside rational and cognitive considerations. The empirical studies use a wide variety of methods ranging from interviews and observations to experimental approaches and questionnaires, and treat crimes as diverse as street robbery, pilfering, and sex offences. It will be of interest to criminologists, social psychologists, judgment and decision making researchers, behavioral economists and sociologists alike. [...] by Publisher : 'Routledge'

• Description : The practice of psychology involves more than the clinical treatment of mental illness. Although the media may perpetuate the view that all psychologists are healthcare professionals, or specialists who deal with deviant or non-normal behaviors, the majority of psychologists study and practice in diverse areas of human functioning other than clinical psychology. Psychology is the scientific study of human thought and behavior, all human behavior. It is a science with the same rigorous research standards as physics, chemistry, or biology. This book showcases a variety of applications of psychological science in the areas of health, law, sports, business, religion, and money. It is an outgrowth of the River Cities Industrial-Organizational Psychology Conference held at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, USA, in October 2008. The theme of the 2008 conference was “Applying Psychology to Everyday Life.” We hope the content of this volume enhances your awareness of the importance of applied psychology and that it motivates you to further explore its potential to impact our daily lives. • Description : All human relationships are containers of emotional life, but what are the structures underlying them? Nathan Schwartz-Salant looks at all kinds of relationships through an analyst's eye. By analogy with the ancient system of alchemy he shows how states of mind that can undermine our relationships - in marriage, in creative work, in the workplace - can become transformative when brought to consciousness. It is only by learning how to access the interactive field of our relationships that we can enter this transformative process and explore its mysterious potential for self-realization.
