• Description : “Finally, a novel of literary suspense that gets almost everything right—forensically and psychologically.”—Sarah Weinman, Baltimore Sun In this "mystery of cold beauty and dark isolation, written with crystalline precision" (Miami Herald), a series of crib deaths in Syracuse, New York, draws the attention of police and national media. Is a serial infant murderer at large?A "haunting story, icy cold in its upstate New York setting but glowing with the unusual brightness of its heroine" (Eugene Weekly), Origin stars a solitary fingerprint examiner who finds herself playing a critical role in the case. Diana Abu-Jaber, a "gifted and graceful writer" (Chicago Tribune), masterfully "transcends formula" (Kirkus Reviews) as "the tension of Origin escalates, shaped as much by beautifully nuanced prose as menacing events" (New York Daily News). • Description : A novel at turns exuberant and wise, in the vein of The Family Fang and The Portable Veblen, about estranged half siblings yoked together on a swampy Gulf Coast island after their biologist father's drowning. Welcome to Leap's Island, where a group of fringe scientists are obsessively studying the Undowny Bufflehead, a rare species of sea duck whose loss of waterproof feathers proves, they say, that evolution is running backward. Into this world of so-called Reversalists come Elsa and Nolan Grey, a half brother and sister whose father, Dr. Ian Grey, has recently drowned while desperately trying to prove his own evolutionary theories. His estranged children find themselves on a pilgrimage to jointly reclaim his belongings and his memory, and to try to understand the stakes of the research he abandoned them to pursue. The Grey children, as the islanders come to call them, despite their being thirty-five and twenty-nine years old, are incredulous that their brilliant father could have believed in Reversalism's pseudoscience. But as the siblings search for an elusive sea bird, confront the island's eccentrics, and hunt for signs their father still believed in progress, a darker question haunts them: Is it their fault Dr. Ian Grey gave up on us all? Delightfully funny and fiercely original, Family of Origin grapples with questions of nature and nurture, evolution and mating, intimacy and betrayal, progress and forgiveness. • Description : This book develops a novel argument which combines the Kalam with the Thomistic Cosmological Argument. It approaches an ongoing dispute concerning whether there is a First Cause of time from a radically new point of view, namely by demonstrating that there is such a First Cause without requiring the controversial arguments against concrete infinities and against traversing an actual infinite (although the book presents original defenses of these arguments as well). This book also develops a novel philosophical argument for the Causal Principle, namely that 'everything that begins to exist has a cause', and offers a detailed discussion on whether a First Cause of time can be avoided by a causal loop. It also addresses epistemological issues related to the Cosmological Argument which have been relatively neglected by recent publications, and demonstrates (contra Hawking et al) the continual relevance and significance of philosophy for answering ultimate questions.
