⊗ Author Profile

“Fern Michaels is not a person. I’m not sure it’s an entity either, since an entity has a separate existence. Fern Michaels, that’s what I do. Me, Mary Ruth Kuczkir. When I was a child in Hastings, Pennsylvania, my name was Ruth. I became Mary when I entered the business world, where it was customary to call yourself by name. Family and friends have always called me Dink, a nickname that my dad gave me when I was born because, according to him, I was “a dinky little thing” (a tiny thing) of two kilos. As they say, the past is a prologue. I grew up, found work, got married and had five children. When the youngest entered kindergarten, my husband told me to move my ass and find work. These were his exact words. I did not know how to do anything other than being a wife and a mother. I was also an avid reader, the library was a magical place for me. It still is today. Rather than face the world without any skill, I decided to write a book. I do not know why, but that did not intimidate me. As my husband said at the time, stupid people do stupid things. Guess what, he’s not my husband anymore. Guess again! I have written more than 100 books, most of which have appeared on the New York Times Best Sellers list. Is Fern Michaels a great writer? No. But it’s a sacred storyteller. When people ask me what I’m doing, I say, “I scribble and tell stories.” It’s a great way to make a living. The Dutch have a saying: “If you are not able to whistle when you go to work, it’s not a job for you.” I whistle all day.”

• Description : Trains Safe and Sound is a superbly informative book for children. In this age of rush, rush and our intricate transit system, author Julie Chatton has written a book that teaches children valuable safety tips regarding the transport system that moves our country and its people daily throughout the world. Chatton not only teaches children the importance of safety, but writes in such a way that piques a child's curiosity. From her personal experience, she knows the devastation of accidents that have occurred because children and pedestrians have not applied common sense rules to ensure safety. Her goal is an important one: introduce children (many who are latch-key kids) to be aware and always conscious of the possible danger while understanding the need for our railroad transport and commuter systems. Chatton manages to instill knowledge as a teaching tool as opposed to fear. The result is an important and educational book that adults will enjoy reading to their children.
