⊗ Author Profile

“Born January 12, 1876 in San Francisco, Jack London, his real name John Griffith Chaney has a difficult childhood: abandoned by his father, put in the nanny while his mother is treated, and finally adopted by the second husband of his mother .

DR.After several moves to escape diphtheria, his family moved to a farm in the Livermore Valley. Jack will have to help his family by doing various trades: sweeper, carpenter, farmer, chicken farmer, seal hunter, oyster digger, launderer …

In 1886, he discovered the existence of a public library held by Ina Coolbrith, first poetess of California, who made him discover literature.
At 17, he won a prose writing competition with Typhoon off the coast of Japan and was published in the San Francisco Morning Call. He will, however, wait two good years before returning to Oakland High School where he will study Karl Marx and Herbert Spencer.

The following year, he will finish the two-year university program, in four months, and publish several stories of adventures, the most famous of which are undoubtedly The Call of the Forest and Croc-Blanc, repeatedly adapted to the screen. His first autobiography What life means to me dates from 1906.”

• Description : Presented together in one volume, these are two of the greatest and most popular animal stories ever written. Even to designate them as "animal stories" seems to undervalue them, because these tremendous works are so much more than mere children's tales, although they are admittedly still greatly loved by the young. Penned by Jack London at the beginning of the twentieth century, the first, The Call of the Wild, tells the story of Buck, a domestic dog who is kidnapped from his home in California and forced to pull sleds in the Arctic wastes. In the second, White Fang, a cross-breed that is three-quarters wolf and one quarter dog, endures considerable suffering in the Arctic before being tamed by a white American and taken to live in California. The two narratives are remarkable for the vividness of their descriptions and the success with which London imagines life from a nonhuman perspective. [...] by Publisher : 'Collector's Library'

• Description : This Top Five Classics illustrated edition of Jack London’s The Call of the Wild and White Fang includes: • More than 30 illustrations from the original editions of The Call of the Wild and White Fang by Philip R. Goodwin, Charles Livingston Bull, and Frank E. Schoonover • London’s 1908 essay, “The Other Animals,” his response to Teddy Roosevelt’s accusation of being a “nature-faker” • A helpful introduction, author bio, and bibliography Based in large part upon Jack London’s own experiences as a prospector during the Klondike Gold Rush of 1893, The Call of the Wild traces the untaming of Buck, a St. Bernard–Scotch shepherd mix taken from his comfortable home in the Santa Clara Valley to the frozen wilds of the Yukon. Published in 1903, the book vaulted London to international fame. Three years later, he wrote White Fang, the story of a wolf-dog who undergoes the opposite journey from the northern wilderness to civilization and domestication. Both books would become synonymous with the author and have rightly remained beloved classics for over a century. [...] by Publisher : 'Top Five Books LLC'
